At least 10 individuals on this list have been investigated by Malawi's Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) or police, or have faced criminal court proceedings.

Here is a breakdown of the individuals for whom public reports of arrests, investigations, or court cases were found:

    • Arthur Peter Mutharika: The ACB was set to interview him in July 2021 as part of an investigation into the alleged abuse of his Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN).

    • Enoch Kamzingeni Chihana: Arrested by the ACB in August 2021 on charges of conspiracy to influence a public officer to abuse her office.

    • Alfred Ruwan Gangata: Arrested by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) in January 2025 on allegations of forgery and was set to appear in court.

    • Joseph Mwanamvekha: Arrested by the ACB in August 2022 on suspicion of abuse of office. He was also arrested by police in December 2021 on charges of abuse of office and fraud.

    • George T. Chaponda: Fired as Agriculture Minister in 2017 after the ACB found large amounts of cash at his home during the "Maizegate" scandal. He was arrested and faced charges including abuse of public office and corruption.

    • Ben Malunga Phiri: Arrested by police in December 2021 in connection with corruption issues at the Ministry of Gender. Reports from 2017 also stated he was under investigation for matters at the Roads Authority.

    • Jean Mathanga: As of April 2025, she was a defendant in a High Court (Financial Crimes Division) case brought by the ACB, accused of giving false information and flouting procurement procedures at Escom.

    • Jappie Mhango: Arrested by the ACB in June 2025 and formally charged with misuse of public office and providing false information to the bureau.

    • Shadrick Namalomba: Arrested by the ACB in July 2025 for alleged abuse of office and conspiracy related to the illegal exportation of hardwood logs.

    • Norman Chisale: Has faced multiple court cases. As of February 2024, he was on trial for allegedly intimidating government officers, including the ACB's deputy director. He also has had his bank accounts frozen due to other criminal and civil cases.

    Other Individuals

It is important to note that some individuals on the list have appeared in court for civil or administrative matters, which are separate from criminal investigations:

    • Jane Ansah: As chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission, she faced widespread protests after the 2019 election. The High Court and Supreme Court found the commission she led was negligent, but this was a finding on the commission's conduct in the election appeal, not a personal criminal charge against her from the ACB or police.

    • Roza Mbilizi Fachi: Was involved in a High Court civil case in 2025 regarding an electoral dispute over the name she could use on the ballot.

    • George Patridge: Was an applicant in an Industrial Relations Court case for unlawful dismissal from a previous job.

    • Feston Kaupa: Was the subject of a 2021 Ombudsman report which found "maladministration" in a recruitment process at the Central Medical Stores Trust, but this was not a criminal case.
